How a personal carer can help
Jack's story
Talk with any of the Best of Care staff and the same
theme will emerge over and over; tales of families who are under huge
stress and of carers suffering health problems due to the pressures
of caring for a spouse, parent, or a child at home. Take Heather and
Jack. Recently they faced the hardest decision of their lives after
Jack had a stroke.
They wanted to stay together but it looked as though
they would be separated. Jack needed more support than Heather could
provide and it was taking its toll on both of them. Jack was faced with
moving into an aged care facility. They both knew this would change
their relationship forever.
Luckily for them Best of Care moved efficiently to match
a personal carer to assist Jack with personal needs and to do "blokey
things" together one afternoon a week. Alan takes Jack to visit
his farm and to spend time with his beloved horses and they have a good
laugh together, having similar interests.
Funding from the Australian Government's Respite for
Carer's programme allows a person to share regular time with a personal
carer. Carefully matching people with a personal carer of similar interests
and personality is a speciality of Best of Care Co-ordinators.
"We take this role seriously" said
Ann Cotterell, Best of Care Managing Director. "It's so important
that people feel in control of their own lives and we don't want to
take that away from them. We want to give
them as much choice as possible."
Heather now enjoys a welcome break from being Jack's
full time carer, enjoying her free afternoons with friends at her local
club. "It's such a blessing to have found
Best of Care" said Heather, "It feels like a huge burden
has been lifted from my shoulders. The staff are all so professional
and caring and always reliable. Jack and
I have got the sparkle back in our lives."
Best of Care have funding available for people like
Jack and Heather. "Basically as long as the person is caring
for another person on a regular daily basis they can access this funding"
Ann said.
