CardsCareer Angels - helping care givers to keep working

Are you caring for someone while trying to work or study at the same time?

Best of Care has an innovative new program, Career Angels, to support carers.

Anyone currently caring for someone who is frail aged or who has Dementia may be eligible for the Career Angels programme, an initiative of the Australian Government.

This programme provides up to eight hours care each week so you can keep working or studying while still maintaining your primary care giving role.

Career Angels can provide:

- Extended day centre respite, in the morning or the afternoon.

- In-home care at irregular times when there is no other support available.

- Scheduled appropriate outings that fit in around the times that you work.

- In-home support to help you seek work.

Helping out

Joan's Story

Joan works three days a week as a receptionist, and also cares for her mother who is in her eighties. Joan's mother recently had heart surgery and her health was quite frail.

Joan approached Best of Care worried that she may have to give up her job. Her job provided her family with income and gave Joan an opportunity to mix with other people, keep her skills up-to-date and giving her a creative outlet.

Through the Career Angels programme, a plan was tailored for Joan and her mother's requirements. A Best of Care personal carer, Susan, was introduced to Joan's mother, and now visits her three afternoons a week.

Susan and Joan's mother work together in the garden, walk along the beach, or reminisce about their families and their lives. They prepare the dinner together as a team so that it is easier for Joan when she gets home.

"It is fantastic, a winning situation", Joan said. "I can continue to work and I no longer worry about Mum all the time I am away."

Best of Care has received funding from the Federal Government National Respite for Carers Program to support carers to keep working or studying.
